What color do you think represents reality? COLORFUL is a game that challenges our normal thought processes, and reveals cultural differences. Prepare for fun and insightful conversations that will leave you wondering why other people don’t see the world as you do.

COMPONENTS

  • 6 sets of 15 color cards with unique backs
  • 60 category cards

SETUP

Shuffle the category cards and place them face down as a draw pile. Separate the Color cards into 6 different decks based on the back of the cards. There should be 15 cards per deck. Each player chooses a deck and any remaining decks are returned to the box.

GAMEPLAY

The game takes place over 5 rounds, or 6 rounds when playing with 6 players.

1 - Randomly select a player to remove 5 of their 15 color cards. All other players now remove the same color cards from their hand, and place these cards aside. They will not be used for the rest of the game.

2 - The youngest player goes first, and play proceeds in clockwise order.

3 - On your turn, place the top category card face up on the table. You will now come up with a word that you feel is related and/or connected to the category on the just revealed category card after the "1)". It is not allowed to talk after the word is given.

The chosen word can not include a color in any part of it. “Blues” is not a legal word.

Ex: The word after the 1) is "music", and the active player comes up with "jazz" as their word.

3 - Based on the word given, each player (including the one who chose the word) chooses one of their color cards and places it face down next to the category card.

4 - The next player in clockwise order now draws a new category card, and states something from the category of the 2) spot.

Ex: On turn 3, the category should be the 3) category on the card.

5 - Continue this process for 5 rounds, or 6 rounds with 6 players. In a 6 player game you will use the “4-5)” category spot in the final round.

6 - Everyone now flips their cards from the first category, and recalls what the subject was. Compare the color cards revealed to see if they match. Continue doing this for all categories.

GAME END

If all players managed to choose the same color for every category, you have won the co-op version of COLORFUL! If there are any differing colors in a single category, then the ruling switches to a points system. For each category: Identify the color that was chosen the most to determine the color majority. Players that played a color card matching the color majority each receive 1 point. If there is a tie in color majorities, all tied players receive 1 point. The player with the most points is the winner! If there is a tie, all tied players share the win!

VARIANTS

TEAMS - In the team game, split into teams as you see fit during setup with a minimum of 2 players per team. Play the game as normal, except at the end of the game, your team only scores points for the number of matching colors in each category that your team played.

BASE CATEGORY - Instead of coming up with a word based on the category cards, simply flip the cards and use exactly what is written as the color subject.

Example: The category card reads “Conspiracy”, and you play a red card since this is the color conspiracies make you think of.

7-12 PLAYERS - If you have multiple copies of the game, you can play with up to 12 players using the same rules. Be sure to play a number of rounds equal to the number of players, so that everyone has the opportunity to name a subject.

DOUBLE COLORS - Do not discard any cards during setup, keeping all 15 in your hand. Each round, you will play 2 colors per subject instead of 1. Then follow the rest of the rules as normal. When scoring points, only exact matches with both color cards played will be counted as a pair for majority purposes.
